XY plotter programmed for artistic endeavor

Hi everyone,
I recently acquired the xy plotter, and everything works fine. I now want to dwelve deeper into programming the machine, but this is a very new field for me and I have all to learn.
My end goal is to have the pen behave as one of the particles visible on this website:

The code for the simulator is open source and can be found here:


I want the movements of the pen to be generated by that code, live.
So, broad questions here, how do I proceed in this direction? What would be the first steps for me to reach that goal while at the same time understanding what I am doing.
I could potentially hire someone, but first I’d like to check the faisability of me learning and doing by myself…
FYI it is for an art installation.
