Thinking of a cable car project

#1

Hi all,
I got a mBot model times ago. I am thinking to create a cable car system for my kid. The very rough idea comes to my mind is to drive a big pulley with a motor and timing belt. A big wheel will be mounted to a rotating axes which is driven by that pulley. In real cable car system, the wheel is used to rotate and cycle the cable so to move the car attached on the cable. I get a plastic wheel of 15cm in diameter. I use a wide rubber band to connect those two wheels, they spin but not quite stable. I am thinking to get some mechanical parts from makeblock to improve the system. I got few questions.

The motor is spinning quite fast. How could I slow it down? Should I try bigger pulley?

The big wheels are connected with rubber band, it is too flexible and doesn’t work well. If I change the wheel with the aluminum gear and using the timing belt to replace the rubber band, will it be too heave for the motor to drive? I am planning to make the wheels 6 to 10 meters apart. I am wondering if it is too long.

I saw there are some plastic gear and aluminum gear available but I don’t see any one with size up to 15cm big.

The last problem I am still thinking is how to attach a car to the belt. I want it to move without stopping (so moving around those two wheels instead of linear motion. Any idea is highly welcomed.
