RJ25 vs. RJ11 vs. RJ12 -- Help Please

#1

Hi all,

I am new to the world of Makeblock and I’m looking for a little clarification about cables. I recently got the Starter Kit, the arm extension pack, and some extra sensors. Unfortunately, I did not buy additional RJ25 cables when ordering the extra sensors so now I need to find some. However, I can’t find any RJ25 cables anywhere in the US (online or in stores). Anybody have suggestions of where I can find these online?

Are RJ11 or RJ12 cables interchangeable with the RJ25 cables?

I’ve noticed the Makeblock site also refers to RJ11 cables on some pages. In fact, doesn’t Mindstorms use RJ11 cables? And as far as I can tell, 6P6C RJ12 cables seem to have the same makeup.

Anyway, I’d appreciate some clarification/advice before paying a lot of money on shipping charges for something I’d expect to pick up in a local RadioShack.

Thanks.

Hi @purerubbish

I am very sorry about that if you find “RJ11” on our website, it must be a mistake. All our cable is RJ25 now. RJ11 is a very ol d version. And I think the RJ12 6P6C is also different with the RJ25, according to here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registered_jack#RJ11

@purerubbish I think rj-12 should work as well. At least this is mentioned in the German wikipedia entry [1] (just search for rj-25 there).

Both RJ12 and RJ25 patch cables (connectors at both ends) are 6P6C (6 position, 6 connector - wires) cables. As such I also expect both should work. The 6 wires at each end connect to same position. RJ11 is 6P4C, so same looking 6 position connector, but only 4 wires are used (sometimes only 2).

If building your own, think any RJ connector supporting 6 wires will work. You just need to ensure the end to end wiring position matches. Look at an existing makeblock cable.

BTW, an RJ45 (internet/lan) connector is 8P8C, so no good either.
