Power both Orion board and Raspberry Pi

#1

I am building a ‘brain’ for my starter robot using and old RPi . I am wondering though how I can power the two of them. I dont want to burn either one out.

  • If I connect the Orion board to my Pi over USB, will that power it?

  • Should I also use the battery pack on the Orion, or is it better not to?

  • If I power the Pi with a battery, will that still be OK?

Thanks for any feedback.

Hi leematt01,

Do you use the Me Shield for Raspberry to connect the Orion board and Raspberry Pi?
If yes, you can power the Orion board only. Here is a link for the info: http://learn.makeblock.com/en/me-shield-for-raspberry-pi/

If you do not use the shield, I suggest you power the pi through a USB akkupack and the Orion through a akku which delivers approx 11V. You will want the extra power to drive your motors. If you search the forum here, you will find a few topics about which rechargeables can be used for driving the Orion board.

I looked at the pi shield. But found many comments on the forum about how poor the programming documentation was. I am a fair programmer, but Arduino programming is new to me. So i would need something with good doco. There seemed to be plenty of examples on the web covering how to communicate over serial via usb.

I would rather have a single battery to charge than multiple, but will look into batteries on the forum.
