mBot to mBot communication

I would like to program mBots so they communicate peer-to-peer with each other.
From reading the forums I get the impression that this is neither possible with the 2.4G nor the Bluetooth version out of the box. Any chance I can reprogram either version to make that possible? I am a software developer but have little experience with arduinos.
Also: is the 2.4G range really as bad as discussed here?
