IPAD Makeblock APP- LED Matrix Display- where is it?

#1

Has anyone found the Makeblock App for IPAD (Blockly) controls for the LED Matrix display i.e. the common 16x8 matrix that makes the face in all their adds etc- for the life of me I just cannot find it?

Don’t see it in there. You might drop a note to @tec_support next week and ask where it is or if it is even included in the iPad app.

OK thanks buddy- I know that its not in there? I have dropped a line to tech support but I know that the answer will be “I’ll tell our engineers” but nothing will happen based on my previous experience? They are busy with the next new product that will be "not quite finished"as per usual. Thanks for looking anyway- the ipad app isn’t open so we can’t go and finish the things that they should have done which is a massive pain!! :robot:

Well, life is the way it is.

One could always write an app and send the commands via the over-the-air firmata (like the Makeblock app does).

Sadly, I’m coaching an FTC team and don’t have the spare time right now. :frowning:

Hi,

Thanks for your reply- yes we are writing our own software actually- just takes time when you do it part time on top of your day job (Teacher)- I’m just supporting an IPAD school with a bunch of mbots that I custom designed with 3D printed add ons and was a bit annoyed that I didn’t realise that the matrix block wasn’t in the makeblock’s Blockly apps as that screen seems central to their marketing of mbot- the lag from the bluetooth speed also is totally horrible- don’t know if you’ve tried it? We have scratch working at lightning speeds over bluetooth now (our own software) but won’t get to the apps till at least Christmass (December in Australia). Good luck with FTC- I know how much work it is keeping such teams on track. Cheers.

I hear you. I was looking at doing an mBlock-like app based on Snap4Arduino, but it looks like I won’t have time to get back to that until after March now. My experience with over-the-air for Bluetooth and WiFi is why the eBook I wrote just has the programs compile and upload via USB. I remember a thread where someone apparently hooked up a Bluetooth dongle in the USB port and was able to use the onboard programmer, but I haven’t had time to test that myself. Right now I’m working on the second ebook that focuses on using the Arduino IDE and the Makeblock libraries as the basis for the programs and hopefully I’ll get that one out by next Spring (in spite of the FTC coaching).

Hi All
Temporarily, there is no LED Matrix block in makeblock App.
Our engineers are working on it to add this block. It will be available probably on 25 Oct.

Hi Chuck,

OK, sounds like we are on the same page. Yes I too have looked at all possible software options. I basically wanted scratch VPL and Arduino hardware so that’s why I settled on Makeblock- previously I had used the UK system Picaxe. Basically I struggled with the limitations of the Makeblock system and modified the hardware and software as much as my abilities allowed and used that to train other teachers. I met a programmer about a year ago at a robotics competition that I run and we have been doing our own serious development for the last year (I even dropped back to 2 days per week as a teacher). We have our own awesome helper app for Scratch now that works over wifi and Bluetooth with all our own custom blocks all based on Arduino

You are in the US I take it? I am in Australia- near Brisbane- on the Sunshine Coast. As you can see from my websites: www.steminabox.com.au and www.stemacademy.com.au I focus on Primary and Middle School Robotics Education and also 3D printing. If you’d like to discuss where all this is going please drop me a line tony@steminabox.com.au – I do a lot of curriculum writing and the plans for next year are to do a lot more so we may have something to discuss.

Cheers
Tony G.

Also seems Makeblock are actually going to add the LED Matrix block? That would be good.
