Function of internal/external Me 3-Axis Accelerometer and Gyro Sensor

Hi. What is the purpose of the external Me 3-Axis Accelerometer and Gyro Sensor? Within the Makeblock app, there is no way (that I am aware of) to connect to this external sensor, so I am unsure of its function. Any information on this sensor (both internal and external) would be very helpful. Thanks!
