Novice robot constructor here… how do we distinguish between the right & the left motor?

The motors are the same. It is the connection that is important. Plug the left motor into M1 and the right motor into M2.

look for the thumbs. 
They are the same, it’s which side you install them on that makes them left or right. The one installed right under ports marked 1&2, and the white motor power connectors - is the left motor.
