Which Motor for lift pulley?

#1

Hi there,

I need to build a vertical lift with a run of approx 1,5m, the weight of cabin plus the passengers (lego characters) is about 700grams.

I plan to put a motor on the top of the lift structure, connect the motor to a pulley and use a thin rope to pull the cabin.

Can anyone suggest me which kind of motor I should use for this project?

Thanks,

Antonio

The three options that come to mind are:

  1. Hobby gear motor, possibly with gears to increase the torque. The downside is that you’ll have to determine the time to run the motor and that will change as the battery discharges.
  2. Encoded gear motor, again using gears to increase the torque if needed. An encoder provides more accurate movement by its nature.
  3. Stepper motor will likely be the most accurate and provide the necessary torque in a constant fashion. If speed is not an issue, this is likely the best choice.

Just my thoughts before my first cup of coffee…
