Trouble with Mbot app for iOS (Bluetooth communication through different iPad versions)

#1

Hi everyone,

We’ve been exploring communication response with the Mbot through two different iPad versions (ipad mini and iPad 2), both updated with iOS8.

While activating Bluetooth function for both devices, they do detect Mbot’s Bluetooth module, (first it is displayed as a “phone” and finally with a “Makeblock” tag). However, when pressing the detected device tag to include it, both devices display a message that the device can’t be paired due to incompatibility. Then, the “Makeblock” option from both iPads disappear (it seems the device automatically erases non compatible devices). The thing is that, just after that, we tried running the app in both devices and, while the Mbot will naturally won’t be detected by the iPad 2, the iPad mini will detect and handle the Mbot succesfully.

Since the iPad mini is a borrowed device, I would appreciate any suggestions to make it work through the iPad2.

Regards.

While I don’t have an ipad2, I suspect the issue is : Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR technology (see specs : https://support.apple.com/kb/sp622?locale=en_CA ). The mini support Bluetooth 4.0 ( see https://support.apple.com/kb/SP661?locale=en_CA ). The mBot Bluetooth module is 4.0.

While the 4.0 supports 2.1, the sotware (either on the iPad2 or the mBot) is probably using features of 4.0.

This is an educated guess.
